Quoridor Classic Game Manager v.1.0 User’s Guide

Thank you for using Quoridor Classic Game Manager v.1.0. Quoridor is a board game for two players. Each player moves toward the opposite side of the board they started on, placing walls strategically to block their opponent. Whoever reaches the other side first wins!

Creating a New Game

Creating a Hot Seat Game

To host a game, select New Game from the File menu. The Create A New Game form will appear. To create a hot seat game for two players, simply enter each player’s name in the appropriate Name field, and click the OK button.

Creating a Game with Networked Players

If you want one or more players to be controlled remotely, click the appropriate check boxes labeled “This player will be controlled from across the network.” And click OK. The other players may join your game at the IP Address or hostname shown in the dialog box.

NOTE: You may have problems hosting if you are behind a firewall or router.

Changing the Port Number of the Server

If you want to host a game on a port other than the default port (for instance, if you want to host more than one game from the same computer), then simply change the port number in the “port” field to a new number, and try to connect.

Joining an Existing Game

NOTE: You may have problems connecting if the client or server is behind a firewall or router.

Closing a Game

If you are hosting a game, or have joined a game, you may close the connection by choosing Close Game from the File menu. This will reset the game and attempt to close all connections.

Playing the Game

This section describes the rules and procedures for playing Quoridor Classic.

Colors

Player 1’s walls and pawns are blue, while Player 2’s walls and pawns are orange or yellow.

Moving and Jumping Your Pawn

To move your pawn during your turn, simply click and drag the pawn to a destination tile. The cursor will change to a “hand” icon to indicate a valid move. Release the mouse button to send the command to the server.

Placing Walls

Each player starts with 10 walls. To move a wall onto the board, drag it onto a tile. If your move is valid, you will see a “ghost” image of the wall on the board. Right click to rotate the wall 90 degrees. Releasing the mouse when it is hovering over a tile will send the appropriate command to the server.

Dragging a horizontal wall onto a tile will place the wall directly above this tile. The wall will extend one tile to the right.

Dragging a vertical wall onto a tile will place the wall directly to the right of this tile. The wall will extend one tile up.

Remember the following:

Move Timer

The move timer, shown in the middle panel in the status bar, indicates how much time is remaining for the current player. When the timer runs out, the current player loses his or her turn.

Winning

To win, a player must reach a tile on the opposite side of the board from which they started. When a player wins, a cheesy window pops up declaring the victor.
